COW SENSE At our cowboy school, learn how to read a cow to anticipate her moves and understand her flight zone. This will enable you to be in the right place at the right time and get the job done safely! What to look for when checking cattle. RANCH ROPING You will be taught how to handle a rope from the ground up. From coiling to the more complex throws you will learn the art of ranch roping. Learn when and where to use these throws effectively. HORSEMANSHIP On a ranch your most trusted partner is your mount. You must understand him to build this relationship. Communication between the two of you is essential. This is where old-fashioned horse sense is learned. We welcome everyone from raw beginners to advanced riders. You may bring your own horse, equipment, and his feed if you desire. RANCH LIFE Checking cattle, fences and feed are part of everyday life on a ranch. You can learn hands on what problems arise and their remedies on a real working ranch. CULTURE Throughout your stay you will be exposed to traditional ranch culture. You will learn the etiquette of the American cowboy. Why you never ask how many cows someone owns, for example. The difference between chinks and shotguns and why and when they are used. Customs and traditions will be observed and explained. In our opinion there is no "dumb question"! You will stay in an authentic bunkhouse on our historic ranch located in the beautiful Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico. You will need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow and personal items. Genuine ranch meals will be served family style, with packed lunches when away from headquarters. After supper, you can spend a relaxing evening hearing cowboy poetry, songs and stories performed by your hosts and guests.
